Her Name

I realized today when I was telling someone else that I haven't explained why Meighan is the perfect name to those who weren't at the airport. We gave cards out at the airport explaining her name. We had her name and spelling picked out before we got the referral. The cards said:

Meighan Beibei Smith
Our Pearl from the Pearl River Delta
Megan (Welsh) = Pearl
Beibei = Flower's Bud (beauty)

We spelled Meighan this way to make it look more Asian. She ended up being from the Pearl River Delta so Meighan was the perfect name. Beibei was the name given her by the orphanage and fits, too. We think she's quite a beauty!

A little more explanation: The pronunciation is "May-Gan". "Mei" in Chinese is pronounced "may". "Mei Mei" in Chinese means "little sister". Hence, "Beibei" is pronounced "bay-bay".

Pictures Posted

I've posted several little slideshows along the side below the blog archive. I broke them down into smaller subjects so you can watch what you want to watch. To watch them bigger, just click on the slideshow and you can scroll through them manually (and see captions that explain some of them as well). We will (hopefully soon) put together a slideshow of just our favorite picture highlights, too.

ENJOY!

Feeling More Human

Last night was the best night yet. I got Meighan down in the crib at 11:15 and she woke up at 6:30! Yeah! We got to sleep more, too! I think she's getting more used to the nighttime routine.

The evaluation yesterday went better than I expected. The worst part for her was getting her ears cleaned out. She has a little ear infection and we have to put drops in that ear and give an oral antibiotic for that and the fluid in the other ear and go back in 2 weeks. The worst part for me was it was all morning seeing several doctors -- although it still wasn't all that bad. (Way better than going to all those doctors separately!)

She's learning new things -- quickly. On Tuesday she learned "peek!" (peek-a-boo) and yesterday in the doctor's office I gave her some Kix and she was feeding herself. Then I decided to have some myself. Then SHE started feeding ME! That's actually a good thing for her connection to us!

Today we went and met Daddy for lunch at Sortino's and then went to Grandma & Grandpa Smith's to play a little bit. She got a little nap on the way home.

I'm still trying to get unpacked completely and get the suitcases put away so I can open the door to the other bedroom. I've still got gifts and souveniers sitting out so she can't go in and just hit keys on the piano yet. She likes pushing buttons on the computer and pushing the keys on the piano and making music. Last night she "danced" with American Idol music! She's fun to watch.

Jet Lag Sucks!

Meighan had NO interest in sleeping the first night home. We took turns holding her and trying to get her to sleep at least a little! No luck! I finally got up at 6:30 but was a zombie! Tony got about 4 hours of sleep. I got none and I don't do very well without sleep.

Finally at about 10:30 am, Tony was preparing to go run errands so I could start laundry and sleep a bit. He was going to take Meighan. Meighan had laid down on our bed face down while we were talking and we realized she was asleep! She had literally CRASHED!

So Tony went and did his errands and I put Meighan in her crib. She cries every time we put her in her crib -- even if she's obviously been asleep! It didn't take long for her to go back to sleep, though. Tony came home later and got her up after two hours. He let me sleep for 4 hours.

Sunday we "slept in." I got up at 7:00 and Meighan finally woke up at 9:30 (after finally going down about 3:00!). Tony didn't get up till 10:30. We made a shopping stop to get some smaller clothes and then went down to my parents' for lunch and to get the tool truck. For lunch Meighan had ham (yummy!), scalloped potatoes (more yum!) and asparagus! She actually ate it and kept eating it! She threw peas on the floor, though! Also was not interested in mandarine oranges. Oh, well.

We stayed till my brother's family stopped by after a ballgame. When they got there they were greeted with blowing kisses and waves and they thought that was so funny! When we finally left I drove the car home and had trouble staying awake! It also felt weird to drive after not driving for 2 1/2 weeks!

We got home and then Meighan and I went to Bible Study. It technically wasn't a class this week. It was a presentation on Thailand. Meighan did very well thanks to it was time for her bottle and I had crackers and Cheerios along. We also walked along the empty back row several times.

Got her down at midnight last night so will try the same thing but earlier tonight as we have to get up early for her evaluation tomorrow.

Meighan Beibei Smith is HOME!

More later! Real tired!

Here's 3 pictures for the non-local people.

Happy Meighan!

Homecoming at Omaha, April 17, 2009

My best intentions were to get up at 4:00 with my watch alarm (quieter than my regular alarm so as not to wake the baby) and get ready and be able to have the luggage outside our room by 5:30. Well, I was finally sleeping and didn't hear the alarm. I woke up at 4:48! Shower and hair were done but hair looked a little funky! Meighan woke up about 5:15 so we dressed her and stuffed last minute stuff wherever it would fit. I was actually setting suitcases out at 5:40 when the bellman came to get them! Whew!

We threw on our backpacks, picked up the baby and went downstairs to check out. We even beat Joyce! She came and ran to the restaurant to get our breakfast boxes and we were off to the airport!

It was about 30 minutes or so to the airport. There was some confusion when we got there. Three people came out help with our luggage while Joyce went to get a cart. Joyce got back with the cart and was a little frustrated because she said "You have to pay him." She told him something in Chinese and then took the cart herself. She led us to the proper check-in counter and we had E-tickets and our email said we'd get the child's ticket from our guide. The airline people were apparently expecting a paper ticket. She went back and forth with them a bit and finally told us all was OK. We got checked in and checked 3 bags all the way to Omaha! We'll see them briefly in Chicago for Customs.

Joyce got us to the security checkpoint and we said goodbye. Security went fine and we went through the departure area where we had to present our departure cards. Another ID check and security check and we were on the way to the gate.

The Guangzhou-Hong Kong flight was very short. We got up to altitude and started descending. We did see the very tall Hong Kong skyscrapers out the window. Once in Hong Kong airport we had to transfer terminals. We had to ask one person who said it was a long way. She was right! And the two moving sidewalks were both going the opposite direction of where we wanted to go! That didn't make sense to us. Anyway, we made it to the correct terminal, went through more security (I think -- It's kind of a blur as I'm writing now!) and found our gate. We started boarding at noon and left a bit early and were on our way to the US!

Meighan did quite well on the 14-hour flight! She did WAY better than a couple other kids (older) did! She took a short nap early because it was nap time and then probably slept 5 1/2 to 6 hours total for her nighttime sleep. We didn't sleep much. I probably dozed for a couple of hours. They played FOUR movies which I did not even try to listen to. This flight didn't go as far north as our other long flight did. We went just south of the Aleutian Islands and then over Vancouver/Seattle area and then over Montana, South Dakota and into Chicago. We were SO ready to get off that plane!

We went through Immigration and had to go through the foreigners' line for Meighan. She's not a good "waiter." She gets real antsy and squirmy. Finally, it was our turn and we gave the officers our sealed brown envelope. They checked us all out and sent us on to Customs. We got our luggage and then went to get Meighan's paperwork all submitted. She's now a US Citizen! We went quickly through Customs and re-checked our bags and continued to the train to get to the correct terminal. While we waited for the train Meighan charmed everyone with her blowing kisses and waving.

We finally got to our gate to wait for our FINAL flight! We each called our moms. Then we changed our shirts and changed clothes on Meighan.

When we got on the flight Meighan went right to sleep even before we took off. I hoped her ears would be OK since she wasn't drinking this time. She did fine. We woke her up as we taxied to the gate in Omaha. We gathered our things and our emotions and left the plane. We each made a bathroom stop and we got out the camera, camcorder, name cards and more kleenex!

Tony recorded us right before we turned the corner to meet everyone! As we turned the corner I couldn't believe there were so many people! They all clapped and cheered and then Meighan did her blowing kisses and waving and won everyone over at that moment! It was a little overwhelming having all those people taking pictures and trying to talk to us. Tony said later that he was surprised he'd lost it as much as he did but he was just so glad to be home! I was surprised I didn't cry as much as I thought I would! I hope we greeted and spoke to everyone who came! If not, we apologize. It was great to see so many people there, though! We counted 41 plus us!

We chatted and worked our way downstairs to our luggage and went HOME! Our parents followed us. My parents had brought MILK(!) and other food for us to eat on Saturday.

It's soooooo good to be home!

We would appreciate any pictures that were taken that night so we can put them in a photo album for Meighan.

Oath Taking Ceremony Day! -- It's Official! SHE'S OURS!

We slept in till 7:00 when Beibei woke up. Since it was her idea, it was more pleasant. We went to breakfast and there were many people there today because of the Trade Fair so we had to wait a bit longer for a table. Beibei ate all her potatoes and scrambled eggs and some oatmeal. We were able to eat pretty leisurely today because we didn't have anyplace to be until 10:00.

At 10:00 I went to the Exit Meeting with one parent from each family. Catherine went through what will happen today and tonight. Four of the other families will be taking the train to Hong Kong tonight and staying in a hotel and fly out tomorrow. We are flying out early tomorrow morning to Hong Kong and then taking United from there to Chicago and then Omaha. I'm sure glad we are flying. The train thing sounds like a lot of hassle to me, besides staying in another hotel!

Also at the meeting we got our bills for our tours, etc. We had given some money at the beginning which took care of things like our cases of water, taxi rides, the van ride to the orphanage, etc. We owed more money so we were figuring out how much we needed to exchange and weren't watching Beibei real close when she walked right off the bed! She (and we) learned a lesson today! We're usually there to catch her but were distracted this time. Luckily she only hit the carpet with her head and not the hard floor inches away! She's also pinched her hand in the drawer when we weren't looking. She's OK. She just learned some consequences this week!

Tony went and exchanged money while Beibei took a short nap. When he got back I went down to Holt and paid our money and asked about breakfast tomorrow. We will have boxed breakfasts tomorrow. I also got some diapers for the trip home from their free grocery shelves.

We had some time to kill so we decided to make one last visit to Michael's Place. They like to see Beibei. We bought a few more things and also some diapers to donate back to Holt's free grocery shelves. While we were there Michael and his wife gave us a gift of a scroll painting of some red flowers considered good fortune. Very cool! We'll hang it proudly! We then stopped at another shop that someone had told us about and bought a couple things there. They actually donate 10% of their sales to an adopted children's charity.

At 2:45 we gathered at the designated place for the trip to the US Consulate General Guangzhou. Several families from several agencies all travelled together in a tour bus and rode 30 minutes to the consulate. Beibei slept the whole way again! We went up to the 4th floor, I think, (we just followed Joyce) and showed our passports when asked. We all gathered in a big room and had to show the copies of all three passports to a guy behind a window. Then we waited till the oath officer (an American who spoke English!) came out and told us about the Consulate here. They used to be on Shamian Island (where the hotel is) but in 2005 they moved this part to downtown. Everyone in China who wants an immigrant visa to the US must complete the process in Guangzhou. The reason Guangzhou was chosen was because most people who want immigrant visas are from southern China.

Eventually she had us all stand and raise our right hands. We repeated the oath after her. I was OK the first couple of phrases and then I started welling up with tears realizing this was IT! The oath officer saw me and I saw that she saw me! I was able to finish (we were all saying it en masse). When we finished she said "congratulations" and we all cheered! The oath officer came over to me and said she'd seen me welling up. For some reason people standing where we were always seem to cry.

We then had to verify all the information on Beibei's Chinese passport and we congratulated everyone. Then we went back down to the first floor and Joyce pointed us to the bus back to the hotel. She had to take four other families to the train station.

We got back to the hotel (it rained a lot this afternoon) (think again of Florida) and were hungry so ate one last time at Lucy's. We spent time in the play room one last time and I wrote this post in my notebook.

I then went to Michael's to type it up and then back to the room to finish packing! We can't wait to get home!

We have to have our luggage in the hall by 5:30 and we leave the hotel at 6:00 for the airport. We'll fly to Hong Kong and leave for Chicago at 12:45. We'll get into Chicago at 2:00 something, go through Immigration and Customs and catch a 5:37 or so flight to Omaha. We arrive in Omaha on United at 7:06 assuming all goes well. We look forward to seeing whoever wants to come to the airport. Anyone is invited!

IF something happens and we won't be on that flight to Omaha, I will call my mom and have her post a comment on this post. Please check united.com and this post for any delays or changes of plans before coming to the airport.

WE CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL!

By the way, the last few days when I wrote the posts in my notebook, I had to catch myself several times and make sure I wrote "Beibei" instead of her new name since we are pretty much calling her by that now!

US Consulate Appointment Day and Orphanage Visit

I was up at 6:00 to make sure we made it to breakfast and were ready by 8:30. Beibei just doesn't wake up well unless it's her idea! She got her bottle and we went down for breakfast sooner afterwards than normal. All she wanted to do was throw croissant pieces on the floor. She did eat a few scrambled eggs but really wasn't hungry. We finished getting ready and met Joyce in the lobby at 8:30.

We got into the van and Joyce said it would be about an hour's ride. Traffic was worse than expected because of the Canton Trade Fair so it took a little longer. Beibei slept the whole way. When we got to the orphanage it looked just like the pictures I'd found on the internet. The lady in charge of international adoptions greeted us and gave us a little tour. Beibei lived on the third floor. We saw the crib she slept in which was the first one inside the door of the room. There were probably 15-20 cribs in that room -- lined up all along the walls and several in the center of the room.

We also saw a baby play room. There were 14 babies on the floor with two caregivers (I think). There were no toys for the babies to play with. The babies just "played" with each other. Another room had older children (walking) and they pointed out a pair of twins. I asked if they would be able to be adopted together and they said "yes." We met Beibei's caregiver and she fed her some fish congee. Yum! We apparently aren't putting enough on a spoon because she ate a whole bowl of congee in about 5-8 minutes! The caregiver just shoveled it into her mouth! That's how they have to do it, though, because there's so many kids. We also got to see the "bath" area. It kinda reminded me more of a kitchen where they wash many dishes at one time. Basins, buckets and shower heads. Beibei does NOT like bath time and now I may know why. Hopefully it won't take too long to have a pleasant bath time at home. We were not, of course, allowed to take pictures of the other children. We asked before taking pictures of each room. The Dongguan orphanage is clean but has only the bare minimum. Tony said he "felt better" after seeing the orphanage (that she was well taken care of).

Next, we were able to see the playground where I'm sure some of the pictures we have were taken -- possibly even the referral photos. Then we went out to the front of the building and took more pictures of Beibei and the international adoption lady (we are never told names).

Next we got into the van and headed to the finding site. She was left to be found outside of a hospital for women and children. The driver had to ask directions of where it was. He eventually stopped on a very busy street and we got out and took pictures and video. There were so many people! I can't imagine how anyone could leave a baby here and not be noticed doing it! Tony got uncomfortable being there and was ready to leave after a short time. Joyce took our picture there and I snapped a couple more and then it was back to Guangzhou and the hotel.

Beibei got very antsy and squirmy in just that hour! Can't wait for a 14-hour plane ride! We've heard a one-word solution for the plane ride -- Benadryl! I have some!

We got back to the hotel at about 12:30 and Beibei got a bottle and then we got her down for a nap before 2:00. Two hours later I was sorting for the start of packing and Beibei and Daddy woke up from their nap.

At 6:00 pm we met Joyce and several other families and walked to the new Italian restaurant on the island. We had a VERY good meal! Excellent! We also found out that Beibei likes lasagna!

We stopped at Michael's on the way back to pick up our laundry and I helped Tony take it and Beibei to the room then came back to quickly post.

Tomorrow is the Oath Taking Ceremony and we pick up her visa and PACK!

Medical Exam Day

We were all in bed by 9:30 last night -- Beibei by 9:10. She woke up briefly at 4:00 but was back asleep by 4:10. Maybe she has bad dreams that wake her up. Not sure. I got up at 7 and Beibei and Daddy were still lying in bed, but awake, when I got out of the shower. Daddy gave her her bottle and then changed her diaper and dressed her for the day.

We went down to breakfast and the other families that we met in Beijing were there. Andrew and his daughter, Leah, (his wife has gone home) arrived at 5 pm last night. Dan & Brian and Sadie got in at midnight, Loreen & John and their daughter, Riley (could be spelled different from this?), got in at 10:00. The California couple and their daughter, Lulu, were also eating breakfast. We told them all about the play room and to make sure they get their Barbies. All of them had to meet at 9:00 to get visa photos taken. There was also another couple who went right to their province and had not stopped in Beijing. They had done the Beijing thing 4 years ago when they came and got their daughter. This time they got Daniel from southern China (they had flown into Nanning).

When they left we came back to the room to brush our teeth and play and wait till our 11:00 time to go to the medical exam.

At 11:00 we met the other families and Joyce led us to the Physical Examination Clinic. We walked about 15 minutes. By the time we got there Beibei was asleep. It's also a very sunny and humid/hot day today so we were all very hot by the time we got there. Joyce led us all through the door labeled Physical Exams for Adopted Children. We all gathered in a room with 3 rooms off of that room. We had to answer 4 questions on a paper and then we all eventually visited each of the three rooms. Our first room was the ENT room where they checked her eyes, ears, etc. Beibei did NOT like that at all! She was crying so much she didn't respond to sounds. Once she calmed down the doctor hit the piano sounds again and she turned her head towards that. Our next room was the Height, Weight, Measure room She didn't like that any better! She's 16.2 lbs, 27" tall and had a temp of 98.4 degrees F. The last room was the Medical, Surgery room. They take off their clothes there and look under the diaper for any problems. NONE of the children like that room! Beibei was no exception! Wow! She's got some lungs on her!

Once we were done with the exam we were free to go. We stopped and got an ice cream bar for each of us -- really good! -- and tried to cool down! We got back to the room and played and eventually took a short nap. Beibei did not want to go to sleep! She's strong, but I'm stronger! We got her up only 45 minutes later and she didn't want to wake up! We're trying to force a schedule today and she's grumpy!

At 3:00 all 6 families gathered at a red couch for a picture of all the newly adopted children. One CRIED for her daddy! The rest, including Beibei, just sat or stood there. Then all the children and parents gathered for a big group picture. We were able to visit with Catherine about tomorrow. Going to the zoo will cost way more than we want to spend so we will only go visit the orphanage and the finding site. That's way more important to us than going to a zoo. We'll go to the zoo when we get home. So... we'll meet at 8:30 tomorrow morning for that trip and we should be back round noon.

Also tomorrow is our US Consulate appointment. We don't have to go -- Holt goes for us.

After pictures, we went and ate at Lucy's again. Then we walked through a park near the hotel and visited with one of the other families. Next it was play room time. There was another family in there who just got their 2-year-old daughter yesterday. This couple is from Washington state and had lived for a short time in west Omaha.

We came back to the room for a bottle and I got laundry ready to take to Michael's and post this post.

Tomorrow we get to see the Dongguan Orphanage. Only three more nights and we get to come home!

Visa Photo and Paperwork Checking Day

Up several times in the night I got up at 7 am. I got Beibei up and gave her a bottle. We were ready to go to breakfast at 8:15 and I looked at the schedule for today again. The schedule said 10-11:30 Visa Picture and Paperwork Checking. Meet at 9. Hmmm... That's different. So we ate breakfast quickly and went to where we were to meet at 9. No one was there so we went to Holt's office and told Catherine what our schedule said. She said we could go take the photo now and get the paperwork checking done early. That was fine with us!

So we walked to the photo place and got the picture taken which took all of 30 seconds. Then we went back to Holt's office to make sure all our forms were filled out correctly. Catherine was very impressed that I was so organized. She said one time she had a group of 10 families doing this and it took 90 minutes. It probably took us 15-20 minutes only because the phone kept ringing because other families are coming in today.

Then we talked about maybe going to the zoo today. Rain was forecasted so she suggested we take an umbrella. We talked a little more and decided to stop at the Safari Zoo on the way back from the orphanage on Wednesday. Today we'll go to the jade market and pearl market.

We met Joyce shortly in the lobby and went to the jade market. We didn't find anything we wanted so we went to the pearl market. This place is amazing! There's shop after shop after shop of pearls, strings of other gems, etc. There's got to be at least 100 shops there! We wondered how anyone could make anything when there's so much in one place! We then looked for more clothes but couldn't find anything small enough. So we came back to the hotel.

It was bottle time, play time and then nap time :-) . It rained while we napped. For some reason all of a sudden we had a little meltdown today, too. Then we spent time in the play room. Beibei is very sociable with the other kids and the other parents are amazed at how well she can walk! She's quite the charmer!

We stopped at Jordon again to look for more things. Then we went to Lucy's for supper. I had sweet and sour pork, Tony had a chicken sandwich and we got congee and French Fries for Beibei. Then we stopped at Michael's Place to post this post and buy more things. Next it is back to the room for formula, play and quiet time and bed.

Tomorrow is Medical Exam day.

HAPPY EASTER! -- Free Day

We had the option of doing a tour of some sort today but decided not to. Beibei woke up at 5:30 and didn't want to go back to sleep. We changed her and had some "tummy time" and woke up at 7:00. Much better!

We got ready and put her in a pretty springy dress for Easter. The one I had bought and had decided would be her Easter dress is a 12-month size so is too big. So we used one we got here. She's so cute! We went down to breakfast and there were SO MANY people eating today! They offered for us to eat upstairs today and lead us to the lounge area -- couches to sit on, no high chairs. They explained since this is Easter, people from Hong Kong and Macau come to spend the weekend here. It's also a Chinese holiday weekend. I think they called it "Ching Ling." Also, the International Trade Fair starts in a couple of days. So they have many people convering on Guangzhou for many different reasons. We made the best of the situation. Beibei ate a whole croissant and several scrambled eggs on top of the formula earlier!

After breakfast we exchanged some money and got another case of water delivered to our room. Then we went down to the lobby and took Easter pictures in front of an Easter bunny display. Then we stopped at Michael's Place to borrow a stroller. Beibei doesn't like high chairs or strollers, I think because she's more "alone" and would rather be held. We went to the "no pressure" store to buy some things. Before we got there a man started talking to us asking where we were from. He said his name was Jordon and this was his store. That's where we were headed! He offered to write Beibei's new American name in calligraphy, no charge. Great! While he did that we looked around and picked out some things to buy. We also had a picture taken with him and the finished calligraphy and Beibei and me. Then we went back around to exchange the shoes that we didn't get to last night because the shop was closed. We got a smaller pair of red squeaky sandals that fit her better. By the time we finished there, Beibei was hungry or tired or both so we quickly returned the stroller and came back to the room for formula. She was not tired, though! Tony went to get us some lunch from Lucy's and I was able to get lots of smiles, laughs and even some belly laughs out of her! It's so funny!

Tony brought back a club sandwich and sweet & sour chicken. The chicken tasted better than the club sandwich. And we found out Beibei likes French Fries -- but not ketchup or tomatoes! Then we took a nap. :-)

Our daily visit to the play room is always a hit. Beibei can walk, run, dance, yell like she yells and smiles and laughs! It's so fun to watch her! We think she's already gotten better at walking in the 5 days since she was placed into our lives. Oh, and she also likes to CLIMB!

We are getting really anxious to come home. I miss drinkable tap water. Tony misses his own bed. The bed here is HARD! It's like sleeping on a box springs. We both miss our family and friends! We have to get the visa picture taken tomorrow and go over paperwork.

We went shopping for more baby clothes but Beibei doesn't like to shop and gets squirmy so Tony took her back to the room while I shopped. I found a couple toys and an outfit. I went and posted this post and will go up to the room for quiet time.

Buddist Temple Blessing and Park

I got to post 2 days today so make sure to read April 10, too!

Beibei woke up right after 6 this morning which was when I wanted to get up anyway. Daddy gave her formula while I got ready. Then Daddy got ready. We ate a good breakfast again. Beibei had several handfuls of scrambled eggs and a little oatmeal. She wasn't thrilled about the rather tasteless canned pineapple. I wasn't, either. Fresh is better.

We brushed our teeth and packed the backpack for today's outing. We thought Beibei was trying to do more than wet pants today so wanted to be prepared.

Joyce took us in a taxi to the Six Banyan Buddist Temple. Very beautiful. People come and offer incense to Buddha. Incense is not a pleasant scent for me. There was a (daily) service going on and we could hear the people chanting. Soon they were filing out of that building still chanting (we have video). Joyce said they were going to the Great Hall for more of their service. We headed to the place where blessings are done. When we got there Joyce explained that the woman kneeling had bought some things and was having them blessed. When we got inside the gate I could see that she was putting away some gems and jewelry. Then it was our turn. Shoes off, we went in and stood where we were told. Eventually we were told to kneel and the priest/monk (not sure what this man's title was) did the blessing ceremony. Joyce recorded it for us. Beibei was very good during the ceremony which only took a few minutes. This temple is familiar with international adoptions and will do these blessings regularly.

We got in another taxi (cheapest way to get around) and went to a park. This park was very perfectly manicured and had lots of trees and flowers and many miniature trees. Joyce took our family picture a couple of different places. After a while we came to a little amusement park for young children. They had all kinds of rides (we have video and some pictures). Also there were people doing exercising and dancing lessons. One dance lesson's music sounded like country music!

It was getting warm so we walked a little more and caught a taxi back to the hotel. Joyce asked if we wanted to do something tomorrow or Monday. We thought the zoo might be a little crowded on Sunday so we will do that on Monday. The other Holt families will come in on Monday night.

It was around noon when we got back and Beibei was acting grumpy again. Daddy gave her a bottle and I went down to post yesterday's post. After posting I bought more things. We like to buy from that shop because they are nice people and let us use the internet every day!

My next job was to find some food. Tony was hungry for a hamburger so I went to Lucy's Bar & Cafe down the street. Someone had told us they have grilled cheese sandwiches. They have everything including Mexican, Chinese, and American food. (I even saw a 28 county NEBRASKA license plate on the wall!). I got us a cheeseburger and a grilled cheese sandwich. I got back to the room and there was NEWS!

DADDY had gotten to change the first dirty diaper! She'd been working on this one for a LONG time! He couldn't believe that much came out of this little of a person! I couldn't, either! He wishes he'd had the camcorder going when I saw -- and smelled -- it! Wow! He did a fine job cleaning her up!

She had not had a nap yet and was just walking around the room checking things out carrying the BOX for the animal cards around, wanting up, wanting down. You know...normal kid stuff!

We ate our American food including French Fries and enjoyed it very much! Tony was tired so laid down. Beibei got into my lap and fell asleep pretty quickly for her nap. Once I got her into the crib, I laid down, too. Nap time is WONDERFUL!

After Beibei napped for 2 hours, we went down to the play room. Today there were several other families in there and we were able to visit with the other parents and hear their stories and ask questions. Beibei charmed everyone. She still goes to anyone without checking for us but we hope that will change soon.

Then we went out shopping, exchanged some shoes for something that fits her tiny feet better, got something to eat and came back to the room for quiet time before bed.

Free Day

Last night was a little more challenging. We think either Beibei's 2-hour nap was too long or we gave her formula too close to bedtime or both. Not sure. I was beat and could not stay awake anymore. Tony finally got her down at 11 pm. She woke up at 1 something and I figured she had to be wet so I changed her diaper. Yep! Wet! Got her back to bed. Then about 3:00 I coughed and she woke up again. I cradled her real close and made sure she was completely asleep before laying her back down. She stayed asleep till 6:50!

Daddy gave her a bottle while I got ready. When I got out of the shower, I thought it was time Daddy did his first diaper change. He was lucky. She was still dry so it wasn't hard. We put a pretty pink dress on her today. It's been warm and humid here (think "Florida").

Beibei is getting more comforable with us. She gets down and walks by herself more. She'll walk to one of us and we'll pick her up. She's blowing kisses and waving more now -- to US! She also started SMILING more for US this morning! Yeah! That made us very happy!

We went down to breakfast and Beibei didn't really eat much this morning. She must have gotten a more tart piece of pineapple because she stopped eating it after that.

We came back up to the room and got laundry ready to take to our favorite shop. Tony dropped off the laundry while I posted yesterday's post and read some emails. Thank you for all the comments. We enjoy reading them! We also got a couple more nipples for the bottle we got the other day.

Next we walked down the street to find another shop that someone had told us about. They are no pressure and good prices. We'll go back there again. While we were there, Beibei fell asleep -- completely. We headed back to the hotel. Tony had her by then and put her in the crib with grandma's quilt. She slept about a 1/2 hour.

We keep trying to get her interested in the stuffed animals and dolls we brought but she keeps pulling away and doesn't want to touch them yet. I'm sure that will change, too!

While she slept I went to Holt's office to have the directions on the rice and oatmeal translated. Catherine said tomorrow we could go somewhere like the zoo or a park or Buddist temple to have her blessed or if we are interested in seeing historical buildings. We'll need to let her know today what we want to do tomorrow.

For lunch today we went down to the deli and had some Chinese food. I had a pork thing but there was something slimy and scary-looking also mixed in so didn't try that part. Also a green leafy Chinese vegetable and rice. Tony had curried chicken and the vegetable and rice.

We played in the play room for quite a while after lunch. Beibei's personality is starting to come out and she's smiling more and becoming more vocal. When she smiles she sticks out her tongue and we can see about 9 teeth (4 molars).

We took a nap this later afternoon after Beibei played with some animal learning cards I brought over. She picks them up and puts them in another pile like she's sorting them.

We went to eat at Subway tonight and then got some ice cream. While we were eating the ice cream outside the store, the store people realized there was a rat hanging out in the doorway! One guy got a broom and a long-handled dust pan to catch it in (right!). Eventually he caught it in a plastic bag. He put that in another plastic bag and put rocks in it and threw it in the river. Great! Dinner and a show!

We stopped at our favorite shop and the owner's son was there now. He's 4 and the owner, Michael, had told his son we were going to stop by to see him. He was very excited to meet us. We took pictures of his family and he said our laundry would be ready in an hour.

We keep finding out new things Beibei can do. She LOVES music and whenever she hears music (and sometimes when only she hears music in her world) she sways or bounces. She can clap. And, of course, she can blow kisses and wave. She want to eat anything we are eating. She got to have a little ice cream tonight. We also finished the chocolate chip cookies I brought and she had a couple peices of those. I think we'll wait till we get home to have more including the chocolate part when we have a high chair tray! She also likes to play "drop the keys and have mama or baba fetch".

We have decided to go to a park and a temple tomorrow. We have to meet Joyce at the Holt office at 9:00. Next week we will probably get to go see the orphanage where Beibei lived as well as the place where she was found.

Passport Application Day

Well, sleeping in today meant waking up to our new alarm clock at 6:10! I gave Beibei a bottle right away and she gulped it down! We got ready and went down to breakfast. We decided to see what table food she liked. She had oatmeal, a few potatoes, scrambled eggs and then we tried some fruit. She LOVES pineapple! She ate quite a bit of that! She also ate some pieces of grapes.

Since we didn't have to be anywhere till later today, this morning we went to our favorite internet shop and posted yesterday's post. Sorry we aren't posting till way later now. Our schedule kind of changed and shops also close so we can't do it the same day before you get up. After we posted, we bought some chops for each of us. A chop is a stamp of your name. We got ours only in Chinese, but he can also do them with your American name AND Chinese name. He said we can pick them up tonight.

We went to the Play Room again and were the only ones there again. We came back to the room and Beibei fell asleep. It was time for her nap. I also slept a bit.

At 2:45 we met Joyce in the lobby to go to the PSB (Public Service Bureau) to apply for Beibei's passport. They had the adoption certificate for us and told us to verify everything again. Joyce told us that the numbers were our passport numbers. I looked at them and the passports and Tony's was one number off. No one previously had told us those were the passport numbers so we didn't check them. They will correct that number and we'll get the certificate tomorrow, I think. Then we had to go sit in front of another person who took Beibei's picture. Then we were done there.

We got into another cab and went to a BIG local grocery store. This store is underground and is several floors' worth of anything you could imagine. We had a shopping list and were it not for Joyce, we would have gotten SO lost in there! We found a waterproof diaper changing pad since we've had a couple of accidents :-) (!) and we also found Mt. Dew for Tony, apple juice for Beibei (found out later she LOVES that too!), grape juice for me, 2 kinds of crackers for Beibei, potato chips for us and baby rice cereal and instant oatmeal for Beibei. We should be set for a while! We paid and it all came to 59 Yuan (about 8-9 bucks!). Wow! We went back up 3 floors to street level and got a taxi back to the hotel. Wow! What an adventure! I'll take Baker's on a Saturday ANY day! And Joyce said it was slow today!

As we were in line to check out we got the "grandma talk" from a grandma. She said we don't have Beibei in enough clothes. Beibei is very warm -- quite warm enough, thank you!

We went down to the play room again and there were more people there this time. Beibei eventually found the big Lego blocks. She KNOWS how to play with them! She played with them a LONG time, till it was time to go eat. She even put them away! I recorded some of her play to show doctors. We even got more smiles out of her while she played.

We decided to go to the new German restaurant on the island. We eventually found it and Beibei did not like being in the high chair. She looked so sad! Tony held her and then our food came. We cut up little pieces of our food for her to eat. She had some of Tony's Hungarian goulash and noodles and some of my potato dumplings.

After we finished eating, we stopped and picked up our chops and came back to the hotel. We're really tired! My back hurts 'cause I'm not used to carrying around 16 lbs so much!

We have a free day tomorrow.

Beibei is walking. She really likes to walk holding onto one of our fingers.

Adoption Registry Day

We had an amazingly good night last night! Beibei slept through the night. I woke up at 3:30 and only dozed until 6. I heard Beibei stirring and looked in the crib and she was upside down to where we put her last night! She's a restless sleeper!

I got up and got ready and then decided it was time to get Beibei up to check her diaper. She did not want to wake up! We got her diaper changed and put her clothes on for today -- one of the outfits we got last night.

We went down to breakfast and she didn't really wake up until we got down there! I got my food and Tony held her. Then I took her and ate my first one-handed breakfast. I decided to see if she'd take a bottle and gave her water. She took it right away and worked hard at the nipple. She eventually figured it out (smaller hole than she's used to) and drank over half the bottle! We also gave her some oatmeal which Tony shoveled (!) into her mouth until she was done.

We met Phoebe in the Holt office and she took us in a taxi to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. Today we got our picture taken and we had to wake her up again for that. Next we had an interview with the Adoption Registration person and then an interview with the Notary. They both asked us similar questions and then we got to return to the hotel. Phoebe got us some milk formula since the 7-11 was sold out of it.

Beibei was asleep again in the taxi and slept while Tony went and exchanged some money. When she woke up I decided to try the formula I'd brought and mixed up earlier. She saw that bottle and gulped it down! She wouldn't let go of the bottle till it was gone! I'm sure this is learned behavior from the orphanage. We have a plan to help her not eat so much at a time.

We went out shopping in the afternoon. All the shops and vendors are pretty competitive in prices and all cater to the adoption community. We found some more outfits in Beibei's size, got some T-shirts, and posted yesterday's blog -- all in the same shop. Most, if not all, of the shops have free internet because they want you to shop in their store. Actually, this particular shop has more things that we'll probably go back and get.

Later today I tried the Moby Wrap that I'd gotten. It works pretty slick! I just have to work on getting it tighter. We stopped at Starbucks and had sandwiches for a late lunch. Beibei grabbed for my snadwich so I took some chicken out and tore it up real small. She ate the pieces so fast I could hardly keep up with her! Then we stopped and got some congee. She pretty much decides when she's had enough.

We rested in the late afternoon and then walked around in the lobby and saw the birds, flowers and waterfall. Beibei blows kisses and waves goodbye. She learned that at the orphanage and actually did it when we were meeting her but we thought it was a "surprise" motion. We've noticed a pattern of when she does it, too. When we walk into a shop and the workers offer to help us, she starts blowing kisses and waving goodbye. It's actually really cute and the Chinese people love it and laugh and give her attention. So, we're not sure she'll do it when we get back to Omaha but she did it when she briefly woke up this morning.

Beibei just LOVES to be held. She will go to both of us equally. We just haven't gotten that spontaneous smile yet. She will smile briefly when she blows kisses and waves goodbye but it's so brief that we haven't gotten a picture yet.

We went down to the play room in the hotel this afternoon. It's sponsored by Mattel and they have all kinds of toys there. Beibei liked one that was Fisher Price Sesame Street and it made all kinds of sounds with different buttons. Then we found a cool piano that had different modes and the keys lit up. Beibei liked "turning the pages" on it. Mama liked that one!

Another aspect of the playroom is Mattel gives all adoptees a Barbie. This Barbie is an adoptive mom with a Chinese baby. It's really kind of neat!

We are currently relaxing and having quiet time before bedtime. I'm writing all the posts in a notebook so I can type them quickly when we do find free internet access. And since we're using free internet, I would assume we won't be able to post pictures. You only have to wait another week and a half to see her!

We can sleep till we wake up tomorrow because we don't have to be anywhere till 3 pm tomorrow!

Loved all the comments from yesterday! Thank you!

Gotcha Day!

Tony's Perspective

Woke up early again. Went to breakfast at 6 am. We got checked out by 6:30 and Penny was waiting by the door. Another exiting van ride to the airport for our 9:00 flight to Guangzhou. Pretty uneventful flight. Landed at noon. Found our bags. Met Joyce from Lotus for our ride to the hotel. Got settle and prepared the gifts for the orphanage. Tried to find some lunch. No luck. No time. Met Phoebe and Catherine. Talked for a bit, handed off some paperwork. Phoebe said the driver was here and Beibei should be close to getting to the Ministry of Civil Affairs where the handoff would take place. When we got there Phoebe said to have a seat and get cameras ready. We were watching the other families from other agencies starting to bond with their new children. Phoebe pops back in and asks for the video camera. They were bringing Beibei to us NOW! We both lost it. The caregiver gave Beibei to Sue and I came in close. Beibei just sat and stared as us both. Sue handed her off to me and started paperwork and interviewing the caregiver about Beibei's schedule. After about 10 minutes (who knows how much time went by? I probably couldn't tell you my name at this point) Beibei finally took the plastic keys I had been rattling in front of her and stared at them then started playing with them and shaking them. I let Sue take her back while I filled out some more paperwork. We took a couple more photos and headed out to the van. Beibei fell asleep in Sue's arm on the ride back and up to the room on the 11th floor. We tried to put her in the crib and she woke up. She was content on my lap when things got warm. Beibei was wet, Tony was wet. Sue's first diaper change. We decided to try some clothes. 18 mo? Forget it. 12 mo? Too big also. Off we go to the store. We got 2 outfits, 2 pair shoes and a hat for about $22. We stopped at Lucy's Bar & Grille for some congee. Don't know what is in it but Beibei likes it! Haven't got her to take the bottle yet but we are trying.

Sue's Perspective

We got up early again today. I actually woke up around 3 am and couldn't get back to sleep. I got up and took my shower and got pretty much everything in the suitcases before we went down for a quick breakfast. We came back up and brushed our teeth and took all our stuff down and checked out. Penny was there ready to take us to the airport. Dan & Brian got there and we were off.

Traffic was better today because it was early. Penny went into the terminal with us to help us get checked in. Then she went as far as security and told us goodbye. She told us that we're the first couple she's wanted to adopt her! She's so sweet!

We got through security with no problems and found our gate. We had to wait an hour till boarding. When boarding started we all got on a bus and they took us out to the plane which was sitting on the tarmac. The plane was full! Mostly Chinese, of course. The flight was 3 hours and we were able to sleep a bit. The coolest thing about this plane was we were able to see our take-off and landing from the nose via a camera.

We arrived in Guangzhou right on time at noon, found our bags and then found Joyce with Lotus. She got us to the hotel and told us we needed to go to the Holt office on the 4th floor by 2:30. We got our gifts ready and cameras and a bag for Beibei with diapers, water, and a couple of toys.

Right before 3 pm, Phoebe with Holt took us to the van that would take us to the Ministry of Civil Affairs where we would meet our daughter! Phoebe said she would operate the camera.

We got there about 20 minutes later and went up to the 8th floor. Other families were meeting with their children. One girl probably 5 years old or so was NOT happy to leave the people she's known.

Phoebe told us to sit down and get the video camera ready. She went down the hall for a bit and came running out and said "Give me the camera!" She recorded them bringing Beibei down the hall and told us to come to the center of the room. They handed her to me and, of course, I was crying! Tony was crying. Beibei didn't know what to think about the whole situation! She was just looking from person to person. She's really little and tiny. She was really warm -- but the Chinese keep their children wrapped tightly.

Soon after that, Phoebe said we should go sit down again and I can ask my questions. Tony held Beibei while Phoebe recorded the question and answer session and translated. The whole time Beibei looked like she was on the verge of tears but didn't actually cry. We gave the gifts to the orphanage and then Phoebe had us sign more paperwork. I have no idea at this point how long we were there -- maybe an hour? -- but finally it was time to leave. Tony carried Beibei to the van and later gave her to me. The traffic was terrible and the drive took a while and she fell asleep in my arms. We got back to the hotel and put her in the crib and she woke up.

Eventually she started to cry as she realized what was probably happening. She wants to be held. If we put her on the floor just a few feet from us, she cries and won't come to us yet. We pick her up and she stops crying. She won't take a bottle yet at all.

Tony had her on his lap and felt warmth. Hmmmm.... He had to change his clothes, I had to change her diaper and wash her pants. We tried drying them with the hair dryer but it took too long. This is when we realized that the 12-month sized clothes we brought were too big! So the 18-month sizes and all the clothes we have at home are too big! She'll grow into them but we need something NOW! So we found some capris that would work and we went out to Subway and then found a store with small sizes. The pjs that came with her are 6-month size and they fit perfectly! We got a couple of outfits, 2 pairs of shoes and a cute hat (since her hair is still so short). We stopped at a restaurant and got some congee which Phoebe told us to try for her.

We got back to the room and boy, did she like the congee! She kept kicking and leaning forward for more. Still won't take a bottle yet, though.

About 9:30 Tony decided it was time for bed. He cradled her and it didn't take long for her to fall asleep. He put her in the crib and she stayed asleep!

We've all had a BIG day. Time for bed!

We have to meet Phoebe at 8:45 am tomorrow to go start the paperwork process.

Orientation Day, Tian An Men Square, Forbidden City

We slept better last night. We ate breakfast and typed yesterday's post this morning. Sorry we didn't get it typed in last night but as you can tell, we had a BIG day yesterday!

Our orientation with Holt started at 9 am. They went through various topics that we've already read about as well as some new ones. Iris lead the meeting and explained that the Chinese people who want to have their pictures taken with Americans are most likely tourists themselves and come from rural areas and probably have never seen a western person before. I found that very interesting!

At the end of the meeting Iris had more recent pictures of all of our children. That's what we all were excited for! Beibei's picture came up on the screen. She still has very little hair! Then they gave us each a book with several pictures and more current measurements and information. She's apparently recenty started walking and weighs almost 16 lbs. Very small. She's almost 26 1/2" tall. The most exciting thing for me under the "Favorite Toy" section it says "She likes colorful toys. She likes music very much." So, I lost it! We are so excited to meet her tomorrow afternoon! Apparently she's still on a bottle but has been introduced to solid food.

After the meeting we had a huge Chinese-style meal with the big lazy susan in the middle of the table. We try everything although we might not like everything!

At 1 pm, Penny met us all in the lobby (there are 5 families -- 10 people) and took us to Tian An Men Square and the Forbidden City. Today is a very hot day. Apparently it's normally cooler at this time of the year. We did a one-way tour where Penny started us at the south end of the square and we walked pretty much straight north through the Forbidden City stopping occasionally for Penny to explain various things. We were all obviously very hot and tired so we just left and didn't hang out very long in the gardens.

When we got back to the hotel Tony ran up to the room to get the chocolates while I kept Penny there for a few minutes. She was excited to receive the dark chocolates. She has been so good to us EVERY step of the way! She will take us and Dan & Brian to the airport tomorrow. In Guangzhou we will have Holt escorts. Penny works for a tour company that Lotus hires.

We're going to go look for a couple of books at a bookstore yet tonight and then when our laundry comes back, we'll pack. We have to be in the lobby by 6:30 am tomorrow to get to the airport.

Palm Sunday -- Great Man, Great Woman, Great Wall

We were ready early again today. We just can't seem to get a full night's sleep.

Penny arrived and we were already in the lobby. We thought we had it narrowed down to two different sets of guys as to who we'd be travelling with today. Penny tried the first one and he was not here with Holt. She tried the second one and he was the right person.

We all got into a van today since there were two more people. We set out for the Great Wall. Today we have been joined by Dan & Brian. Dan is here to adopt a 2-year-old girl. His wife stayed home with their son. Brian is his brother-in-law who came along to help. Holt recommends you have help from someone if you are single or your spouse isn't travelling.

Our first stop was a jade carving place. They told us about all the different kinds and qualities of jade and showed us how they start a piece, carve it, and then polish it. Then the guide showed us a laughing Buddah and told us to rub the tummy for happiness, rub the ear for longevity and rub the head for intelligence.

After the little tour they let us look around the store and told us where the specials were. And since we were the first group of the day, the more expensive (not on special) items were 25% off So we decided we wanted a jade dragon and found a very nicely colored one. We also wanted a laughing Buddah so we got a very nice one of those. We also found a very nice pendant that I can put on a chain at home.

Another exciting van ride took us into the mountains and to the Great Wall of China. Maybe Sunday wasn't the best day to go to the Wall. Lots & lots & lots of people. Maybe more than Disneyland. Narrow tunnels with 2-way traffic. Room for 1 car and many pedestrians. Finally, we got to the Great Wall to walk. We had seen portions of it on the drive in.

Almost indescribable. Tall. Wide. All stone. Climbing hills almost unwalkable. We chose the "easier" path to the south. Wow, this is the easier path? Very steep. Many steps. Way worse than walking on a roof. Not being in shape, this is a steep climb! Then it levels off for a bit and then there's more steps or a steep smooth incline. It basically follows the lay of the land -- mountains. Luckily there's handrails most of the time. We couldn't believe the range of ages on the wall. From too little to walk (or sleeping!) and having to be carried to older people that probably have no business being there! (Although, I think older people in China must be healthier due to their diet and exercise they get.)

Anyway, we had an hour to go as far as we could (or wanted) and come back down to meet Penny. After that climb, I asked her "Why didn't you want to do that?" She just laughed! She says one of the four things to do when you go to Beijing is climb the Great Wall because you're not a true man until you climb the Wall. I told her I must be a man now since I climbed the Wall. She said I'm a great woman and Tony is a great man now since we climbed the Wall.

So, by the time we were ready to leave it was near noon. I think everybody in China must have been at the Wall today! There were so many pedestrians I'd guess it took 30-45 minutes to leave the area. The police stopped all the vehicles from going through an "aweful tunnel" for quite a while. We recorded on the camcorder and camera all the people surrounding the vehicles.

Once we finally got out of the Great Wall area, we stopped at a cloisonne factory. Penny took us through the steps of how cloisone is made and then lead us through the store to a restaurant. All four of us ate together and visited while Penny and the driver did something else.

Driving back into Beijing, we saw that we were going to drive past the Bird's Nest and Water Cube. Dan & Brian were trying to figure out a time to go there. Penny said they wouldn't have time today or tomorrow so since we were right there, they got out to see the Bird's Nest and would take a cab back.

Penny took us next to the Hutongs. These particular Hutongs are right between the Bell Tower and Drum Tower. This is true old Beijing. The alleys are narrow and many, many people still live in these neighborhoods. They have stores, places to get a hair cut, primary schools, etc. We rode around in a pedi-cab. A guy peddles you in a little 2-person covered cart. We tried to record the ride to show how they live. We stopped for a few minutes while Penny explained the gates. Then we rode a little further and Penny introduced us to a family who live in a Hutong! We got to go inside this woman's house. It has been in her family for 100 years. She had picture of her with the Wall Street bull in New York. Her sister and her niece live with her. Her niece was there and was doing some of her artwork. She paints tiny paintings INSIDE of tiny bottles! It's just amazing! We bought some pieces to bring home.

Inside the Hutongs was very quiet. You don't hear the traffic and noise of Beijing. As soon as we left the alley, the noise was there again.

Penny had asked us yesterday if we'd like to see an acrobat show tonight We said we did so they took us to the theatre. Penny bought the tickets and even helped show us to our seats! Then she left. She held onto our backpack and purchases while we were in the show! She had nothing to do she said. So and hour later she met us outside, hailed a cab for us and told the driver where to take us. She's just a gem!

We got back to the hotel and decided to go try to find a gift for Penny since she's been sooooo good to us since the moment we arrived in Beijing! We found a grocery store and got some dark chocolates (she said yesterday she likes chocolate -- especially dark!). We got some laundry ready to have it washed tomorrow while we are having our orientation.

Boy! Are we tired! Tomorrow I think will be a little easier with just the meeting in the morning.

We are using free internet in the lobby of the hotel and they are Macs. Not really able to do anything with pictures at this time. Sorry.

Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven Day

We got started early again today. Penny came a little after 9 so we got going. We had a different driver today because the other driver had something to do. The drive to the Summer Palace was maybe 30 minutes or so. I think everyone was at the Summer Palace today! We saw all the main residences of the emperor and the Dragon Lady Empress, the longest corridor in the world which has 14,000 paintings on it, the marble boat and rode the dragon boat to the other side of the lake.

When we were done here, Penny and the driver found another traditional restaurant. Penny left us to eat ourselves and she and the driver ate together. She ordered for us. We had a chicken dish with carrots, celery and pineapple, a vegetable plate with broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and cucumbers, a beef dish with sauce and onion rings (different breading than we get in the states), fish ball soup, rice, jasmine tea, and a fruit plate which included oranges and tomatoes. I had water and Tony tried beer which were both served in small glasses (by "small" I mean like juice glass size).

When we were done eating we left the resturant. At this point we made another note to ourselves: When parking on the sidewalk, leave NO space between any of the cars!

We stopped at the Temple of Heaven and walked around there. In the morning people will do their tai chi there and then they will gather in a corridor and play poker and we saw people crocheting (some even had items to sell), kicking a feather thing around, some playing traditional Chinese instruments and just generally relaxing. Of course, there's ALWAYS people trying to sell things, especially to foreigners. We stick out like sore thumbs here! We actually bought some feather things (I'll find out the name of it later) to bring home.

Penny then had the driver drop all three of us off at Wangfujing Street so she could show us where the Olympic Store was. We went in and she asked. They said it closed on March 31. Of course, it did! Then she tried to help us bargain for some things in another store but they actually didn't have enough of what we wanted so we'll look elsewhere.

Penny left us to get to the bus to go home. We walked back to the hotel where we both took a nap.

Later on we walked to a nearby mall. They have one floor devoted to children but it was so hot in the mall and the stores were even hotter so we didn't stay long. We walked to a silk store but didn't stay long there, either.

We'll meet Penny at 8 am tomorrow.

I've noticed how the Chinese like to make everything look good even when it might not be quite so good. There's billboards all over and yesterday I happened to catch a glimpse of what's behind the billboards. They are poorer neightborhoods with basically "shacks" for living quarters. Sometimes you can only see the rooftops but they are definitely not very affluent areas. Your eye is definitely drawn to the very colorful billboards (a lot of which have the Beijing 2008 emblem or something to do with the Olympics on them) so it was just by chance that I noticed what's behind them. Now I try to notice it more often. I'm not sure if they did this just in time for the Olympics or not.

Another example of extreme difference is actually right outside our hotel windows. We have a corner room on the 11th floor and the windows that are on the "back" (north) of the hotel look out over one of those very poor neighborhoods. The neighborhood is completely surrounded by modern buildings. The windows to the west look out over the modern buildings and on down to the Wangfujing Market. We can also see the entrance to either the Forbidden City or Tiananmen Square.

First Full Day in Beijing

We were up at 3:20 am this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. Maybe it was because we went to bed at 8 pm last night! So we got up at 5 am and went down to eat breakfast at little after 6. We explored the hotel a bit and then came back to the room. We couldn't remember whether we were to meet Penny at 9 or 9:30 so we decided to be in the lobby by 9. We decided we were tired again (jet lag does funny things to a body!). We laid down and set an alarm for 8:45 am. We actually slept till then! We went down to the lobby and Penny came a little before 9 and said it was really 9:30 so we got an early start today.

We drove basically straight north to the Olympic venues of the Bird's Nest and Water Cube. We worked our way around the outside of the Bird's Nest and finally found the place to buy tickets to go inside. That place is awesome! They have video of the Olympics playing and they have a couple of the inflated Fuwa in the middle that people were having their picture taken in front of. Penny is willing to take our pictures in front of and with anything. We even brought a World-Herald that we are showing in some pictures! We sat down in front of 5 stuffed Fuwas for a picture. You basically just have to push your way in to take your turn.

Next we made our way over to the Water Cube. Penny told us that the place to buy tickets was about a 15-minute walk away. We decided to walk with her. The ticket place is in the OPPOSITE CORNER of the premises from where the entrance is. So we walked ALL the way around the Water Cube to get the tickets and then back to the entrance. Security is tight and bags are put through X-ray at both venues. At the Water Cube they also wand you. Tony forgot about his pocket knife in his pocket. He had to have Penny translate some things. They kept the pocket knife while we went into the building and she had to go back with a claim check after we were done.

The Water Cube is really impressive. We got to see the pool area, take pictures, and Penny took our picture there, too. After we left the building, Penny told us to "wait here" while she went to get the knife. We were just hanging out watching people when 2 gals came up to me and, I thought, wanted me to take their picture. NOPE! That's not what they wanted. One gal had the camera and the other gal pushed me backwards a bit and told Tony to come over (all of this with no actual words). She wanted HER picture taken WITH US! I thought that was funny! I couldn't stop laughing! So we just stayed there waiting for Penny. Next thing we knew, a guy wanted his picture taken with us! THAT was hilarious! We started realizing we were the only non-Chinese people in the area! Before we knew it, there was a "line" (in China, a "line is more of a "grouping") of people wanting to have their pictures taken with the stupid Americans! We couldn't believe it! There were a couple of guys that only wanted Tony in the picture with them! Some gals and ladies only wanted me! Soon, one of the security guys came over and broke things up! Whew! Apparently Penny had come back and told him to tell us to come out of the gate. She says that happens a lot!

So we met up with the driver again and he took us all to a traditional Beijing restaurant. Penny ordered and we had a chicken dish, salad, and eggplant/mushroom(fungus)/green pepper/bamboo shoot dish along with rice and Tony got noodles. We practiced using our chopsticks and ate plenty.

After lunch we went to a silk factory and saw how they get the silk and make bed quilts out of it. They also have all kinds of clothes to buy. We bought 3 sizes of outfits for Beibei to wear as she grows. I tried on jackets but decided I didn't need to spend that kind of money.

Our next stop was the Pearl Market. Penny took us to a store she knew would give us a good price. We ended up getting a string of pearls for Beibei which the clerk "made" right in front of us. She put the clasp on and put knots between all the pearls and finished it right up and it all took about 5 minutes. We'll give the pearls to Beibei when she's older and can appreciate them. I also got a kind of unique pendant necklace for myself.

Then we were dropped off at the hotel. We'll meet Penny again tomorrow for the next day's touring.

We decided to venture out to the Wangfujing Market. There's all kinds of shops and stores and there's also a "snack street." We've been told it's a good photo op but to not eat anything. So, we exchanged some money and set out. We made it over easily without having to cross a street. We did have to cross a busy street, though, to get to the pedestrian only part. We walked into one store that looked like it had cheap sourvenirs. EVERY person we encountered the first few feet wanted to sell us something. We're not even sure there were any other customers in there! I said "Let's get out of here!"

Supposedly there are a couple of stores in the market area that sell Olympic stuff. The one we found was all torn up being remodeled. Then we found an interesting-looking entrance. It ended up being the snack street. There were scorpions on-a-stick (still moving!), seahorses on-a-stick, some kind of bug on-a-stick, starfish on-a-stick, some other things we couldn't tell what they were on-a-stick. One thing we'd seen previously but didn't know what it was ended up being strawberries with a heavy sticky candy/glaze all over it on-a-stick! Then we made a turn and...more stuff! Looky, looky! Want to buy something? Don't touch anything or show an interest in anything! Just keep walking! We bargained for a couple of things and one applied quite the pressure! She started off saying she wanted 85 Yuan per piece (I wanted 8 pieces). I kept saying NO and tried putting the items back several times. We ended up agreeing on 120 Yuan for ALL 8 pieces -- and she gave me a "free" one to boot!

We were glad to leave the market area. We walked back to the hotel and on the way found a "supermarket" and bought water and Mt. Dew. We ordered room service and will turn in soon.

Riding around Beijing for a day, we've made some observations about driving in Beijing. Here are

TONY'S TIPS FOR DRIVING IN BEIJING

#1 - DON'T!
#2 - Lane markers and red lights are only a suggestion.
#3 - Turn signals have been replaced by horns.
#4 - Don't use your turn signal unless you are actually TURNING (not for changing lanes).
#5 - Cars, not pedestrians, have the right of way (just run 'em over!).
#6 - There are as many bicycles as cars on the road.
#7 - If you think there is at least 2" of space to the side to change lanes, go for it.

Even so, amazingly we haven't seen any accidents -- yet. Maybe it's because EVERYBODY drives like this!

We look forward to reading your comments! See the March 31 post for How to Make a Comment on the Blog.

The Longest Day!

We got off to a slow start yesterday. We were an hour late leaving Omaha but we had plenty of connection time in Chicago so we were able to just amble to the international terminal. We had some sandwiches and drinks so we just had to get some chips and we had a quick meal right before we boarded.

As we were eating, a VERY LARGE group arrived to be on our flight. They were all wearing the same T-shirt wich had the name of their group "Highland Park High School Band" and "China 2009" on it. I eventually asked someone how many were in their group. About 75! That includes adult sponsors. While we were boarding I met one of the directors and asked if they'd been invited. He said they were. Ten years ago they had been invited also so now they were invited back. They will be doing 3 concerts in Beijing in a week!

We decided that if you ever have the choice to be on the same plane as a band, DON'T! They didn't take the hint when the cabin lights were turned off! Nice enough kids, but noisy!

Just under 6 1/2 hours into the flight we crossed the International Date Line. A lot of the time we'd look out the window and there was "a whole lot o' nothin'"! I got a couple of pictures of the areas north of Canada where you could see water AND snow differentiated. And it NEVER GOT DARK!

Our first meal I thought was VERY good for airline food. I had chicken & rice. Tony had beef & pasta and thinks he maybe should have gotten the chicken.

We arrived in Beijing at 2:45 pm, 30 minutes earlier than scheduled. That's quite a flight! We were sooo tired of sitting! After going through Immigration, we got our bags, walked through Customs (literally just walked!) and found our sign with our name on it. We got checked in at the hotel at 4:30 pm. Our guide, Penny, told us she'd see us in the morning since we were so tired.

We took a short nap, came down to the lobby to exchange some money and write this post.

We're going to bed now! We're 13 hours ahead of you in Nebraska!
