Pictures of Xi'an

Our first stop on our tour of Xi'an was the Shaanxi Provincial Museum which included artifacts that had been discovered and preserved from all over the province.  The big thing in this province is the Terra Cotta Army and they had some of those here as well as scale models of digging they did.

After the museum, we visited the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.  There were many Buddha statues here that people would present their gifts and incense to.  We could have gone into the pagoda but it was an extra cost and Tony's knee had been bothering him so we just read the sign about what was in the pagoda.

Touching the laughing buddha's belly will bring you much happiness.

After the pagoda, we were taken to a place that replicates the Terra Cotta Warriors -- which, of course, also had a shop where they follow you around wanting you to buy something.

Our guide offered to take our picture.

Decorations in the shop.  Notice the banners overhead!!!!  In China!

Next it was lunch time.  We were taken to the second floor of a VERY COLD building for lunch.  We were led into a very large banquet-type room and there was only one table with people at it.  I think they were mostly speaking Russian.  Our guide and driver went to a different table to eat.  Not sure why because the amount of food they put on our table for just 2 people certainly would have fed all 4 of us!  The tea they brought actually tasted and felt so good because it was so cold in that room!  The propane heater they had for the other group was moved in between our tables so we could get a little benefit out of it, too.

This is ONE noodle!  There were 4 on the plate for us.  Notice I still have my coat and scarf on!  Boy, that tea tasted and felt good!

Next, it was finally time to see the Terra Cotta Army!

This is one of the 3 farmers who were digging a well when they discovered Pit 1 (numbered in order of discovery).  He, however, was the only one who signed the papers to have rights to the property.  Our guide told us that before the pits were discovered, he did not know how to write a single Chinese character.  Now he knows how to write three characters -- his name.  We bought a book and for the price of the book we were able to have him sign the book and have our picture taken with him.

Pit 1 - the most excavated and most famous via photographs.

They are still working on restoring some of the statues so they have them in the back of the building but numbered so they know where to put them back.

Pit 3
I asked how they knew there were more pits.  Our guide told us that after they found Pit 2, they knew where to find Pit 3 based on knowledge of locations and placement of other religious and military findings.

Not Much To Say

Not much to say about a year ago today. We were still traveling to Xi'an. We arrived at 10 pm to the hotel, got checked in and slept REALLY well.

The one thing I can say about a long day like this is that when you travel from the U.S. to anywhere in China or that part of the world, stay up till it's time to go to bed. Otherwise you will be up at 3 a.m. not knowing what to do. I think we did better this time with the time change because we couldn't really "sleep" well until we got to the hotel. I laid down across some seats in the Beijing airport and dozed for a bit and I think we both kind of slept on the plane from Beijing to Xi'an but when we woke up in the morning after sleeping all night, it was much easier to enjoy the day than it was the first couple days on our last trip.

One Year Ago Today...

...we boarded a plane to China in order to complete our family!

A very long day later we landed in Xi'an for some pre-adoption trip touring.

Since I was not able to post pictures during the trip last year, I will post some each day THIS year as we relive our journey to Dawson!

Portraits

We finally got Dawson's professional pictures taken in October.  Then we did the family in early November and Meighan's annual ones right before Thanksgiving.  Dawson didn't smile for any of the pictures for his single session.  I think he was overwhelmed with all the flashes.  The one I picked out of both kids was the ONLY one he smiled in for that session with Meighan.  The family one -- at least everyone was looking at the camera!  And...Meighan just doesn't take a bad picture at all!

Happy New Year - This 'n That

Happy New Year!  --  A little late...

Well, through all of us being sick at one time or another over the holidays, we made it through Christmas and New Year's.  Tony got sick around his birthday, then I started getting a sinus infection, Meighan and Dawson had colds/coughs/fevers at various points.  Tony is done with his but I coughed (pretty bad at times) for a while, Meighan coughed sometimes and Dawson coughs when he gets running around and has a runny nose and fever we have to watch.  Finally got him some cough medicine and a dosage amount from the doctor.  Geesh!

We spent Christmas Day at my parents' house.  We had our traditional lefse (my mom's side of the family is Norwegian).  We got home quite late.  We went over to Tony's parents' house the next evening for the kids to open their many gifts.  I think it was a little overwhelming for Dawson (besides his being sick) to have all those toys to play with.  He just didn't know where to start.  At home we TRY to play with one thing, get it put away (or mostly) and then get out something else to play with.

New Year's Eve was spent watching the tribute to Dick Clark and then Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest.  I couldn't do much else (see next paragraph) so I had to watch TV.  We let Meighan stay up to watch the ball drop on TV in NYC and then we all three kissed.  So neat!  Dawson wouldn't have made it to 11 pm yet so he was sleeping by that time!

On Sunday, December 30, I woke up in the night and had to get up but I couldn't put any weight on my right hip.  I got a hold of my chiropractor and he met us at his office that afternoon to adjust me.  SUNDAY!  I ended up going for adjustments every day for the next week (INCLUDING NEW YEAR'S DAY!) and I'm so tired of the pain that I still have and not being able to get around to do things around the house.  Tony went back to his route on Wednesday, January 2, so I had to be up more to deal with the kids.  On Thursday, one of the other doctors adjusted me because my doctor was out of the office on his day off.  This doctor, who's NEVER seen me before could tell that I have been putting ice on my hip.  Wow!  Finally, on Friday, x-rays were taken of my hip.....

I got to see the main x-ray on Saturday.  Wow!  My right hip is WAY lower than my left hip.  My whole pelvis is tilted!  No wonder I'm in pain!  Monday, January 7, with the adjustment that I had, I finally felt that I was walking better.  Not perfect, but better.  I still have pain down my leg but I think it is less sometimes.  I still lay on ice every day.  I know I'll get to walking right again.  I'm just quite frustrated that it's taking so long!

During all of these adjustments, I have to say that I HAVE THE BEST CHIROPRACTOR IN THE WORLD!  He REALLY CARES about all of his patients (and I feel, especially me, with this issue!) and he and the other two doctors in the office go above and beyond the call of duty to get us feeling better and staying well.  On Wednesday, (Jan. 2), while I was waiting for my appointment, a lady sat down next to me.  There were several kids in the waiting room and she said "This looks like a pre-school in here!  These kids aren't all here for adjustments, are they?  What would they need adjustments for?"  I told her that kids need adjusting, too, sometimes.  She kind of shrugged and sort of agreed with me.  Then the conversation got around to my hip.  She said "Do you think this will help?"  I said, "Oh, yes."  She then asked, "What does a 'regular' doctor say?"  I said, "I haven't asked a 'regular' doctor.  This is not a 'regular' doctor's problem."  She then jumped right to "Maybe the hip needs to be replaced."  WHAT?!??  I told her, "No, this just started Sunday.  It doesn't need to be replaced."  Well, I could tell she was very new to chiropractic.  I hope she finds that chiropractic helps her, too.

Anyway, Meighan will start a tumbling class tonight for seven weeks.  I hope it will help her use up some of her energy!

Here's a few pictures of Christmas and beyond:
